INTERNAL MEMO: UPDATE ON PROGRESS

JapaDemy, an education technology start-up is aiming to address the critical shortage of healthcare workers in Africa. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there is a projected shortfall of 10 million health workers by 2030, mostly in low- and lower-middle income countries.

However, countries at all levels of socioeconomic development is said to be facing varying degrees of difficulties in the education, employment, deployment, retention, and performance of their workforce. The serious shortage of health workers across the world has been identified as one of the most critical constraints to the achievement of 2030 Agenda for the sustainable development goals.

Who We Are

JapaDemy, led by a team of diaspora-based experts who are passionate about returning home to invest in Africa, is launching a Skill and Workforce Development Program January 2024. The program is aimed at preparing, equipping, training and empowering 1 million unemployed and unskilled population for entry into the healthcare profession over the next 5 years.

About the Project Launch

The mission of the educational project is to guide, mentor, train and inspire home-grown talents to develop passion and interest in the nursing and medical professions, with the ultimate goal of addressing the talent gap in the healthcare industry in Africa.

With a vision driven by a team of diaspora-based experts, JapaDemy leverages the power of digital technology and circular migration to reverse brain drain.

The Problem We Are Solving

Africa is experiencing a rapid uncontrolled population growth that many see as a huge challenge. Africa has the fastest growing and most youthful but untapped population in the world, with a significant portion under the age of 15. With a projected 2.5 billion people by 2050, the continent is experiencing one of its most explosive population growths ever.

Our Diaspora-led Solution

Excited about turning the challenges of Africa’s rapid population growth and high youth unemployment into a global opportunity, the brains behind JapaDemy is seeking to build an online international skill and workforce development centre poised to reposition Africa, as a major player in the global workforce.

How We Are Starting

JapaDemy is running a talent development and skill mobility hub with a curriculum that will gradually upskill individuals with no healthcare background, with basic first aid, care-giving and healthcare skills, which in turn prepare them for progressive entry into the nursing, midwifery, and healthcare professions.

Our program is a 100% tuition-free online education that is open to any talent with a high school certificate or college diploma with or without any healthcare background. Applicants are expected to create a free account with the school, and then undergo a pre-admission screening and assessment.

All who demonstrated excellent ability at the screening stage are then offered a full scholarship into the online school for a 3-month preparatory program that introduces them into the fields of caregiving, nursing, midwifery and world of healthcare. The program curriculum is delivered  a team of diaspora-based healthcare professionals as an overseas-exchange, international training and mentorship program, which is followed by a three-month apprenticeship program in collaboration with local private and government hospitals.

Collaboration and Partnerships

JapaDemy is seeking a collaborative kick-off and delivery of the program in 2024, with special interest in partnership with diaspora organizations and networks, as well as diaspora-based experts with African descent, who are committed to driving investment in the nursing, midwifery and healthcare professions in their home countries.

JapaDemy, employs a diaspora-sponsorship concept where highly successful and well-established diaspora experts can establish their scholarship program within the school, and high-flying students are expected to be sponsored to complete their program. There is also a partial scholarship program where the students pay between $5 and $30 monthly for the program’s duration.

As part of its long-term plan, JapaDemy is also committed to providing partial and full scholarship for its highly performing graduates of the program who get admission to study nursing or other medical profession. Applicants who do not make through to the school are also supported to undertake free short courses that will help them improve in their knowledge and understanding of the nursing profession.

JapaDemy hopes to extend its skills and workforce development program to practicing healthcare professionals who desire to advance a career in the field of tech.

Looking into the Future

JapaDemy is hoping to receive at least 10, 000 applications across 12 African countries within its first 6 months of launch.

Support and active participation are also expected from well-established and passionate diaspora-based nurses, midwives, and other healthcare professionals, who are interested in driving investment in the African healthcare sector.  

A fund-raising campaign to develop sustain the curriculum development and expansion, technology infrastructure, and its community overseas-based mentors and instructors is also in the pipeline.

Lastly, JapaDemy will strategize to establish strong partnerships with secondary schools in Africa to integrate its healthcare courses into their curriculum.
